2017 Vin de Constance: the best gets better

3 Sep 2020

'Details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail.' - L Da Vinci

Since its reintroduction Vin de Constance has been one of the wonders of the wine world. In terms of value I can think of no peer, in terms of sweet wine quality. Well, one has to look at Yquem or the scarcest Beerenauslese to find an equal. And you won't find them at this price. Since he took over in 2012 Matt Day has examined every detail; exploited a new cellar, a developing move to organic and biodynamic viticulture and has been able to make small changes in the winemaking. Truly Matt has sweated the small stuff and those incremental improvements have pushed the quality higher.

2017 was a drought year and yields were tiny. But over the two month harvest period they accrued 20 batches of wine from which to make a blend. This is the third vintage made in the new cellar and Matt and team now have a better, detailed understanding of how it can help lift the quality. Through the ability to make small tranches of wine from the different passes at harvest it gives a precision that enables the end product to have such beautiful elegance and natural balance.

And the wine? So far only James Suckling has published a note and he says 'This is really sensational as always with dried-apricot, dried-pineapple and honey character with salted nuts and hints of white syrup. It's very sweet, yet energetic and intense. It goes on for so long. And then again. Yet, it remains balanced. A great sweet wine through and through. Drink or hold.' Vin de Constance is an extraordinary wine and a rare chance to have some of the world's finest in your cellar. With its texture, its freshness, depth and unctuous character this is my perfect sweet wine. And that's no detail. /CW
