2016 Bordeaux: from the bottle

5 Dec 2018

Compelling consistency: Bordeaux 2016

"2016 is the most consistently great year since 2009 and 2010, both at the top of the market and in terms of good value wines" - Lisa Perotti-Brown, ''France, Bordeaux: The 2016s in Bottle', robertparker.com

This October saw the annual reunion of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux in London, an opportunity to taste the 2016s for the first time in bottle. The event attracted a huge crowd of trade professionals and press, all eager to sample across the range of 138 crus classés. This horizontal tasting offered an opportunity to compare the vintage with years gone by, and many are hailing 2016 as one of the great Bordeaux vintages of recent years. There is remarkable consistency of quality, as well as compelling expressions of distinctive and varying terroirs. As Lisa Perotti-Brown describes in her recent report, 'when you taste the wines, they do not so much scream 2016-as you get with a 2008 or 2010-but they do want to tell you where they come from.' /RRS
