2014 Bordeaux: shining in the estuary drizzle

Holy Week and Andrew and I are in Bordeaux, today whizzing round the grand properties of the Haut-Medoc.

By the time you read this we'll probably have reached the Leovilles - Poyferré and Las Cases and since they are the ninth and tenth visits of the day respectively we ought to have gained a decent first impression, at least of the left bank. To find out what we think of the wines from the gravel croupes, check out our blog tomorrow morning and all being well you can read the first bulletin from France itself and not just my desk in the shop.

The colour of Bordeaux is deepest red, which is not just a reflection of my corduroys. Since Good Friday is a bank holiday, we're having our Free Friday tasting in the shop on Maundy Thursday this week and so's not to miss out on tasting very young and serious reds, we're showing a line-up of 2011 Bordeaux. Like 2001 this is a largely overlooked vintage with considerable charm. However, don't take our word for it, pop in from midday and taste for yourself.

We'll be tweeting and blogging like mad - follow us here and here. /CW
