Christel Spinner of Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Yesterday's main action happened just after we hit send on our email summarising the day's action. Xavier Borie followed the successful lead of John Kolasa and released the stunning 2014 Grand-Puy-Lacoste at exactly the same price as Rauzan-Segla, allaying fears of a hefty increase for this much anticipated wine. Though she's too modest to admit it, technical director Christel Spinner must take much of the credit for the improvements these past couple of vintages. Working alongside consultant Eric Boissenot, she's brought a new rigour to the winemaking process. With some of the critics' highest scores, this is our second most requested wine of the vintage. It's the wine to buy if you only want one Pauillac in 2014.

This morning, another much requested wine. Arriving from Vieux Chateau Certan, Feytit-Clinet had a tricky spot in our day's itinerary. But we needn't have worried, because Jeremy Chasseuil's 2014 wasn't all that far behind it. This is another property giving the lie to the idea that Merlot wasn't good in 2014, with 93% of it producing a supple and tender wine with fine structure and fabulous, aromatic fruit. I can't think of a better value in Pomerol this year.

Finally, to Margaux. For Henri Lurton, tasting the 2014 Brane-Cantenac in vat was a direct reminder of the 2000. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine as most of the Merlot goes into the second wine most years anyway. They have an early terroir here and harvested from the 22nd September with the Merlot, finishing on 9th October with the last of the Cabernet Sauvignon - with plenty of time left to enjoy the Indian summer. They especially note the amount of light in the late summer and autumn, which made a delicate, almost feminine wine with drive and energy, depth and aromatic complexity. /AR
