2012 Burgundy: Gevrey-ChambertinRene Bouvier, Pierre Damoy

In the Cote de Nuits all is not doom and gloom. Yes, it's another less than prolific vintage, but the wines are super and generally didn't have the extreme hail and disease pressure seen in the Cote de Beaune. Across our tastings, whether from resident Gevrey producers or those based in other villages with holdings in Gevrey, we found what quickly came to be a hallmark of the vintage: terroir differentiation.

Gevrey-Chambertin generally is reckoned to produce some of Burgundy's longest-lived and most profound wines, especially those grown on the serious slopes where Clos St-Jacques is and which are richer in iron. The wines are structured and at this stage are holding a lot in reserve in terms of their development. Dark cherry fruit and an iron but open fist of tannins in a silken velvet glove. /CW
