2011 Quinta do Noval declaration and port round-up

31 May 2013

Quinta do NovalPlus port on tasting at our Bishopsgate shop from noon

Christian Seely and Quinta do Noval are both utterly immaculate. But it was not always so. As Christian is never seen without a bow-tie, until his arrival, Noval was never seen without a layer of empty sardine cans, the daily lunch of every vineyard worker. His first job was to cause their removal and he hasn't stopped improving those vineyards since. This, together with a mix of tradition and up to date thinking in the cellars has resulted not only in possibly the best Quinta do Noval yet, but the first Nacional since 2003. Despite his undoubted influence, Christian is the first to credit Antonio Agrellos with the success of Noval as Antonio is the man on the ground heading the team.

So what has made 2011 so special, not just here but across the region? As Jancis Robinson said, 2011 ports are the best wines made anywhere in the world that year. The quality of the fruit, small yields, foot treading and perhaps most importantly much improved spirit for the fortification have all played their part in producing a breed of port that is, and will continue to be drinkable for the next sixty years.

The wines are so good that excited wine critics have been moved to issue their enthusiastic verdicts on the wines in a timely manner, rather than wait til we've completely sold out. Scores are attached to this offer, tasting notes are quoted in full on our website.

Tiny quantities of Dirk Niepoort's 2011s will be available to taste on a first come, first served basis from noon. /CW
