2011 Scavino Barolo: top terroirs

30 Apr 2015

Enrica Scavino

Silk and stone, the essence of Nebbiolo

The warmth of 2011 wasn't the only contributing factor to the high quality and drinkability of the wines. As the Scavinos report, the well timed and moderate rains have also had a large part to play, helping the vines to avoid hydric stress. Dryness can be good for fruit quality, but for ease of ripening, colour change and an ideal growing season, then a bit of precipitation at the correct time is important.

Enrico and Enrica Scavino have made a super suite of fine-grained and full flavoured Barolos that precisely represent the qualities of the vintage, being richer than 2010 and requiring less age. They still have a modernist badge, but the year the wines spend in small casks before being transferred to traditional large barrels produces wines whose texture is opulent and seductive. /CW
