The 2011 Huet wines are truly brilliant; glinting diamonds of wines, beautifully structured and packed with mineral fruit, yet the vintage may well be better remembered as guiding light Noël Pinguet's last. His transformation of the estate into a biodynamic powerhouse of naturally made wines is the stuff of legends and this property has accrued arguably the finest track record of any in the Loire. The vineyards are some of the best sited in the region and despite his denials the hand of Pinguet has long been a tangible aspect of the wines.

The affinity of Chenin Blanc to his area and the deployment of a strictly applied biodynamic regime gives these wines a fine quality unsurpassed by anyone else's I can think of. These mineral, transparent gems are all about terroir in 2011, with the emphasis on dry wines giving us a chance to see through the fruit to the rock beneath.

So, the end of an era, yes, but one with years of succession planning and key personnel overlapping back to the time of Gaston Huet himself. We won't see much change in the wines in years to come. /CW
