2010 Le Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino
'Le Potazzine Brunellos are signature Montalcino bottlings and, like great producers all over the world, the small estate produces quality wines even in difficult vintages, while in excellent vintages the Gorellis make some of the finest Brunellos in the denomination, with gorgeous aromas of leather, earth, and underbrush, and ripe cherry-berry flavors and fantastic depth.' - Kerin O'Keefe, Brunello di Montalcino: Understanding and Appreciating One of Italy's Greatest Wines
Giuseppe and Gigliola Gorelli bought this small, high altitude property in 1993. In 1996 they added a further 1.5ha of vines in Sant'Angelo in Colle, a warmer site. The couple grew up in the area and have decades of experience with Sangiovese but Giuseppe is far from self-taught: he has advanced training as both oenologist and agronomist. He used to consult at a number of other properties (and still does at Sesti), but now focusses most of his energy on his own, ever improving wines.
Traditional vinification used to be carried out in a cramped space barely big enough for the large botti. The latest wines benefit from a greatly enlarged cellar which gives Giuseppe and his family much more flexibility. Fermentation is spontaneous - wild yeasts and no temperature control - and extraction is gentle and slow, with up to 30 days of skin contact. The wines are structured, complex and beautifully balanced; they are delicious young but also age and you'll find multiple vintages in Uncorked staff reserves. /CW
