2009 Pol Roger Brut Vintage: a masterpiece of harmony
Between the orchard and the boulangerie, the 2009 Pol Roger offers aromas of flower, apple and pastries. The sherbet texture on the lips is followed by a saline cut of oyster shell, then a surprisingly rich, forward mouthfeel. It is an instantly appealing vintage.
Good vintages can be hard to come by in champagne, where the weather can be capricious in the best of years. 2009 saw a cold winter, a mild spring, some stormy weather then a hot, dry August which brought on healthy ripening. Warm weather lasted until the harvest was in.
Pol only release vintage cuvees when they feel conditions merit it. Their 2009 is made from the blend they traditionally favour of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, from 20 grand and premier cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Cote de Blancs. Their concept of a vintage champagne is one which places balance above all else, a wine that will acquire more complexity and richness with age; and yet the 2009 is so beguilingly attractive already it may be hard to hold off. In Pol Roger's own assessment, in the 2009 they have produced a masterpiece of harmony. /NT
