A memory from the sixties - whether you were there or not
'This draws you in, with aromas of warm halva and toasted pistachio giving way to a wide range of buckwheat, toasted sesame, walnut husk, menthol and licorice root notes that refuse to break down in the mouth. Exhibits remarkable length, with ample viscosity matched by steely tension, putting this in rarified air. Drink now. 580 cases made.' - 98 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, January 2017
Old colheita port is one of the wine world's great glories. Having aged gently for decades in their 'pipes' (a 650 litre cask made of thick oak to withstand transport), they have shed all their sediment and lightened in colour. Once opened they last much longer than a conventional vintage port and don't require decanting. They are also gloriously complex and fully resolved with figgy and nutty flavours and are as equally at home with cheese or chocolate as they are with Mahler or Grime, or just an absorbing book.
It goes without saying that Taylor is one of the top port producers with great vineyards on the granite terraces of the upper Douro as well as vast expertise and huge stocks of old wines. They've been investigating those old barrels over the last few years and selecting a very few high quality casks to bottle tiny quantities of these unique wines. Of course they are delicious, but they are obviously apt for the great anniversary. They prosper with this sort of age when other lesser wines are deteriorating. /CW
