In 2011, the Barton family acquired the lovely Moulis Chateau Mauvesin, henceforward Mauvesin Barton. A decade on, with a new winery and a lot of care, Mauvesin Barton is looking increasingly impressive. The 2021 offers ripe black fruit with a menthol, minty top note and a wrapping of cigar leaf. Nicely balanced on the palate, with plenty of freshness. (NT 23/05/22)

The 2021 Mauvisin Barton has a well-defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, crushed iris flower and a hint of cinnamon. Very classic in style, it’s nicely focused with neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with more tension than the Deuxieme Vin and gentle grip. Quite juicy in style thanks to the 48% Merlot, a pinch of cracked black pepper emerges toward the finish, tingling on the aftertaste. 90 points

This is light but well done with balance and careful extaction of gentle, soft berry fruits. Hardly any tannic frame at all, this is working with not against the vintage, careful winemaking if a little soft on the finish. Harvest September 30 to October 11. 87 points
