Next week we welcome Charles Braastad to Uncorked to show the entire range of Delamain’s stunning Cognacs and to slightly gild the lily by accompanying them with chocolate: one of life’s great hedonistic and sensuous experiences. Delamain’s eaux de vie have historically been the result of only purchasing the finest barrels from the acme of artisan distillers and further ageing and blending them. Delamain Pale and Dry was the first Cognac I paid my own money for (in 1976) and it’s been a firm favourite ever since. Production is tiny and when I visited labels were still applied by careful and steady hands.
Founded by Irishman James Delamain and based in Jarnac, the house has never produced a three star or VSOP brandy, just a selection of differently styled XOs, many containing spirit distilled decades ago and stored in ancient glass demijohns. They don’t reduce the strength of their Cognacs with water, preferring the use of old ‘faible’ spirits that have lost alcohol by evaporation.
We’ll taste:
Delamain Pale & Dry
Delamain Vesper
Delamain Tres Venerable
Delamain Extra
Delamain 1988
Delamain 1973
And there will be matching with Handmade Chocolates.
