A whiff of herb and gorse-flower from the island of Crete, a fresh sea breeze from a flower-speckled shoreline. Crete is bulging with indigineous grape varieties and this Thrapshathiri does not disappoint. Idaia is a small family-run winery nestled in the heart of the vineyards in the island`s Malevizi district; husband and wife oenologists Vasilis and Calliope specialise entirely in the island`s native varieties. The crisp, maritime acidity will cut straight through a plate of pasta and sardines. (NT 16/08/19)

The 2018 Ocean Thrapsathiri is dry, unoaked and comes in at 13% alcohol. Well done, this is smooth and round, with fine texture and a respectably long finish. It`s dry and fresh with a lively feel, despite that roundness, and a fruity burst. This is a lot of fun—and it has a bit of distinction—in its youth. It`s probably not going anywhere with extended aging, but for now it shows great. Until it proves otherwise to me, I`d drink this young and fresh, like now. 88 points
