Jane Anson

The 2018 Olivier is powerful, dense and also quite savory, with terrific persistence and plenty of character. Licorice, game, smoke and grilled herbs add shades of nuance throughout. Today, the 2018 is a bit compact, but hopefully it will flesh out a bit more in élevage. 88-91 points

Julia Harding

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot; 30% new oak. Inky with purple rim. Intense cassis and an attractive stony layer, the oak drowned out by the small-berried black fruit. On the palate, the tannins are thick but chocolate-smooth and there’s just enough freshness here. A powerful wine but in balance for the longer term. 16.5+ points

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Olivier has a wonderfully fragrant nose of black cherries, black raspberries, fresh blackcurrants and kirsch with suggestions of lilacs, cinnamon stick, cloves and camphor. Full-bodied, the palate is beautifully poised with loads of crunchy, bright, energetic fruit and a firm, finely grained texture with loads of freshness and a long, perfumed finish. Stunning! 92-94 points

This is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked September 26th to October 12th, 46% Merlot, picked September 14th to October 12th, and 4% Petit Verdot, picked October 4th. The yield was 40 hl/ha, the alcohol is 14.94%, and the pH is 3.64. It has a rather cool and reserved nose, dark with salty black olive, black bean, rose petal and grilled black cherry. The palate has a fresh, open and nicely balanced structure at the start, with a very accessible wealth of grilled black fruits, with the olive and bean notes from the nose, supported by a broad bed of dark, bold and sin ewy tannins. This is a real success for Olivier, through to the long, fading seam of tight, dark tannins in the finish. Regardless of where it sits within the vintage it has to be one of the best reds I have ever tasted at this property. The élevage will be in 30% new oak. 92-94 points
