2018 Larrivaux (Haut-Medoc)

64% Merlot/26% Cabernet Sauvignon/3% Cabernet Franc/7% Petit Verdot. Harvest dates October 1-8. Consultant Eric Boissenot. Larrivaux has been in Bérangère Tesseron’s family since – wait for it – 1580. More remarkably yet, in all that time the chateau has only ever been run by women. A ripe vintage like 2018 is great for the Haut-Medoc, where vines may struggle to ripen in cooler years. But Larrivaux is on good soils (clay & limestone) and their 2018 is a great success, everything a good, traditional claret should be – crunchy, fresh, full of black fruit , then a mineral smudge of graphite on the finish. Jane Anson

This is dark plum in colour with a seductive nose of damson fruits. Grilled oak touches become a little overpowering through the mid-palate, overtaking the ripe fruit. That said, there`s an awful lot to enjoy here and it should settle down during ageing, rounding out those slightly awkward edges. Drinking Window 2023 - 2036. 88 points

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Larrivaux features baked berries, warm cassis and herbs with pencil shavings and olives notions on the nose. Full, rich and concentrated, it has firm, grainy tannins with nice freshness and great length. 91-93 points
