The Clementi-Lisini family who own and manage Lisini have lived here since the 1500s. Their first estate bottling was in 1967, the same year as the family helped found the Brunello Consorzio. Around 350m above sea level and benefitting from breezes off the sea only 20km away, Lisini's vineyards encompass the full complexity of the area's geology: sandy clay and silt soils are mixed with iron oxide from the historic eruptions of nearby Monte Amiata. From the beginning, Lisini proved to be among the best Brunello had to offer.
2013 was marked by a cool, wet start to the growing season followed by a long and warm but not especially hot summer. Growers across the region enthused about a vintage that was a blast from the past: long and slow, aiding flavour development and ideal for phenolic maturity. The 2013 Lisini Brunello marries freshness with intensity, force with opulence, offering aromas of graphite, strawberry and rose petal backed by spice and savoury top notes.
While 2013 was classical and elegant, 2012 was ripe and heady. The best wine from the 2012 vintage at Lisini was held back for a year's extra aging, and is now being released as the 2012 Riserva. And then there is Ugolaia, the estate's pride and their flagship wine. Only released in the very best vintages, Ugolaia is the fruit of a small plot with an especially favourable combination of soil, aspect and microclimate. It is the finest expression of this most fine of Brunello producers. /NT
2013 Brunello: 'Bright medium red. Spicy, floral perfumes of red cherry, red currant, licorice and minty herbs. At once juicy and lively, but also dense and energetic; bright, harmonious acidity nicely frames the cool flavors of red currant, spicy plum and minty herbs. This refined Brunello boasts outstanding tension, midpalate energy and focus. Finishes with polished tannins and noteworthy floral lift. 93 points.' - Ian D'Agata, vinous.com, February 2018
