Noble and mature wines from Neive on tasting from noon today
Don't ever tell us that we don't let you taste mature wines. The wines of Barbaresco producer Dante Rivetti age so well we couldn't resist this chance to show them off, so if you can make it down to the shop between noon and 6:30 today you can try pairs of mature or maturing vintages from two different single vineyard sites, the Bric'Micca and the Bricco di Neive.
There have been Rivettis in the town of Neive since the 1800s, but it was only in the 1970s that Dante Rivetti took over the estate that now bears his name. It remains very much a family business, and they farm some very fine sites on the slopes around the town. 'Bricco' is the local dialect word for a prime hilltop site, hence 'Bricco di Neive'. Nearby but with a different aspect and on chalkier soils is the Bric'Micca vineyard. Bricco di Neive often makes slightly more powerful wines, and those of Bric'Micca may be that bit more ethereal.
Barbaresco for a long time sat in the shadow of its most gloried neighbour Barolo; it is still less well-known. Yet it is the other great home of the Nebbiolo grape where it proudly displays its status as one of the world's most noble varieties. /NT
