After several hundred years of being bought & sold, Haut-Bailly was acquired in 1955 by Daniel Sanders a Belgian wine merchant. Although suffering neglect, and despite being reduced to only 10 hectares, Sanders was convinced he could return the Chateaux to its place at the top of the Bordeaux firmament. The purchase by Robert Wilmers, a wealthy U.S. banker, in 1998, has allowed that restoration and investment to continue. General Manager Veronique continues the involvement of the Sanders family. The estate is now planted to 29 hectares, with parts of the vineyard over 100 years old. Traditional viticultural methods are followed. No chemical weed-killers are used, ploughing is done manually with hoes, picking is by hand. With Denis Dubourdieu and Jean Delmas consulting, the quality is assured. A combination of the long growing season and gentle extraction has given the 2007 wines great balance and structure, but with concentration and power.

Perfect for drinking now but sure to last for another decade or more. The aromatics of this are just gorgeous, unfurling in the glass to show russet and undergrowth, liquorice, soft black chocolate and savoury but welcoming berry fruit. This 2007 vintage saw a cool summer but a warm September and October, meaning careful work in the vineyard and patience was necessary. Underestimated on release. The wines might not have the structure for long ageing as with 2010 or 2000, but they are blossoming right now, and offer great pleasure; classic balance. Drink 2020-2038. 93 points

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. One of the best wines in the flight, Veronique Sanders has fashioned an Haut-Bailly that is very fresh and well defined on the nose with superb delineation and a sense of natural charm. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine supple tannins, good acidity, svelte and harmonious towards the finish that has touches of apricot and spice towards the finish. Highly recommended.
