Less than a couple of miles from the sea at False Bay, the 45 year old vines here were planted by Bernard`s grandfather. It was an interesting decision, since most Pinotage in South Africa is planted on clay, here the soil is sandy granite with a high proportion of silica. The style is unusual too, super-burgundian with red berries and cherries; light-bodied with a touch of petrichor and mineral finish. Fresh. (CW 24/07/20)

Like many of Bernhard Bredell`s best vineyard blocks, Féniks is influenced by the proximity of False Bay. Slightly riper than the 2018, but this is still a light-bodied style of Pinotage from a brilliant young winemaker. Deeply coloured, intense and serious, with rose petal and patisserie notes and a fresh, tangy finish. Drink 2022-27. 94 points
