2019 Schloss Johannisberg Grunlack Spatlese

`One of the greatest Riesling-terroirs on the Planet Wine` wrote Robert Parker (never one to mince his words) of the vineyards here. And after 900 years of viticulture at Schloss Johannisberg, they have certainly worked out how best to manage this terroir. They devoted themselves exclusively to Riesling in 1720, which makes them the world`s oldest Riesling estate. And if that`s not enough, it is also claimed that the world`s first Spatlese, from overripe and partly botrytised grapes, was picked here in 1770, and the first Eiswein in 1858. But what of the modern day? While a visit to the vineyards might make you think they are a very traditionalist estate (which they are), a visit to the winery proves they have also embraced best modern practice. Year after year they get scores and reviews which easily place this estate among the top flight of German producers. (NT 20/08/20)

The 2019 Grunlack Spatlese is a perfectly elegant and seductive wine. 100 points

Schloss Johannisberg is the spiritual home of Spätlese and they still know how to do it. The fragrance is not shy yet filigree, with great diversity of fruit. On the palate The Grünlack is simply delicious, juicy, zesty, animating and tingling. Sweet apple, peach and orange are just some constituents of an amazing array of fruit, sweet and refreshing at the same time. 18 points
