2018 Berthaut-Gerbet Vosne Petits Monts

So different in style from the domaine’s Fixin wines. The ‘Little Mounts’ lie just above Richebourg and make a slightly lighter version of it; Berthaut-Gerbet’s section of Petit Monts abuts Cros Parantoux, and their vines here are 70 plus years old. No tractors can get in so everything is done by manual labour. Exquisite and exotic, full of dark fruit, toast and eastern spice. The mouthfeel is dense and velvety, with an enormous amount of matter – this will take a long time to come around. The aftertaste is long, dark and sweet. Just stunning. (NT 09/01/20)

Jasper Morris MW

Bright purple, with some real energy to the nose. A lovely and genuine hilltop freshness while the summer has brought ripeness to the fruit. Excellent balance throughout. 20% whole bunch certainly helps. A very dainty style to the fruit and excellent persistence. 93-96 points

Matured in 40% new oak and with 20% stems, the 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits-Monts 1er Cru was showing a touch of reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with very good backbone. A little stocky for a Petits-Monts but shows impressive sapidity toward the long finish. Patience is needed here. 91-93 points

A very ripe yet still reasonably fresh nose speaks of mocha, anise, violet and mostly dark pinot fruit. There is fine energy to the rich and lilting medium weight flavors that possess an appealing mid-palate texture that offers a marked contrast to the firm, noticeably austere and compact finale. This will definitely need a few years to unwind and add depth. 89-92 points

Rich, dark fruited and lightly peppery. Lovely depth of sweet black fruit, and the tannins are incredibly smooth already though compact and well built. Depth of dark fruit but delicacy of tannin, and just lovely freshness from 2018. 16.5+ points
