2017 Warre`s Vintage Port

Bright aromatics but also very rich with lots of silky dark fruits and floral notes. Very powerful and brooding on the palate with great depth and length. Very classical and great value. (JW 23/05/2019)

3,600 cases which was 13.6% of Warre’s total vineyard production. Old vines were really important in 2017 warm, very dry conditions. Warre’s Cavadinha and Retiro vineyards have old mixed-variety vines (one-fifth and one-third of the respective vineyards). They are also quite high and cooler, facing north and east. Yields were exceptionally low, the old field blend at Retiro produced just 470 g/vine and the Cavadinha field blend 860 g/vine. At Telhada, Warre’s vineyard in the remote Douro Superior, the average yield was also well down with just 590 g/vine. Fruit also came from the neighbouring privately owned Alvito and Netas properties. Quinta da Cavadinha 44%, Quinta do Retiro 31%, Quinta da Telhada 17%, Quinta do Alvito and Quinta das Netas 8%. Touriga Nacional 22%, Touriga Franca 15%, old mixed vines (field blend) 63%. TA 4.5 g/l, Baumé 3.7. Bottled May 2019. Ripe and pure black fruit, smells fresher than the Dow’s. Sweet blackcurrant tea and a touch of dark chocolate, like chocolate-covered fresh black cherries and blackcurrants. Becomes more floral as it opens, wilder, more exuberant. Chewy, chalky rather than grainy tannins. Deep and rounded and long with a dry-tasting finish. A generous, full-bodied whole. 18 points

The 2017 Warre’s Vintage Port is made from some incredibly low yields, the Retiro vineyard cropped at a paltry 470 grams per vines. It has a very concentrated nose. This is higher-toned than the Cockburn’s with macerated black cherries, boysenberry jam, orange rind and a subtle eau-de-vie like element that becomes more pronounced with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced and very well structured. This has tons of grip, a more masculine and assertive Warre’s compared to recent vintages. The acidity is extremely well judged with layers of black fruit laced with graphite and white pepper towards the prolonged finish. This will require a decade in the cellar to soften those tannins, but it will surely be wo rth the wait. 94 points

Based on Quinta da Cavadinha in the Pinhão valley as well as Quinta do Retiro in the Torto and Quinta da Telhada upstream, mostly a field blend of fruit from old vines backed by Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca: lovely, open floral aromas, so fresh and aromatic, typical of the Tourigas with a touch of green tea leaf, underlying concentration; wonderfully pure, sweet plum and wild cherry fruit, backed by fine grained tannins, wonderfully fresh, not the biggest wine by any means but supremely well integrated and elegant. Near perfect poise. 18 points
