The 2017 Lespault-Martillac Rouge has a fresh, if slightly rustic bouquet. No offence but I can imagine knocking this back in a decent bistro. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannin, tarry dark berry fruit, quite peppery in the mouth with a solid finish that just needs to muster a little more finesse. 86-88 points

65% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot. Deep cherry red. Pretty, creamy black fruit with a hint of vanilla sweetness. Lifted bramble fruit. Fresh and silky but a little bitter on the finish. 15.5 points

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Lespault-Martillac opens with pretty red and black currants, rose hips and dried herbs notions with touches of underbrush and smoked meats. Medium-bodied, elegant and with a lively line, it has a chewy finish featuring red and black fruit layers. The final blend is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon. 88-90 points
