The 2017 Clos Puy Arnaud felt a little over-extracted on the nose with touches of prune infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, smooth in texture with some quality new oak rounding off the edge, although I wonder how much substance lies underneath? Maybe a fine early-drinking Côtes de Castillon? 86-88 points

This is bright, with tension and hold throughout the palate. It’s lacking some of the brightness and generosity to the fruit texture that you’d find here in a usual year. This wine really tells of the challenges faced by the Right Bank during the vintage. It has a gorgeous balance and bounce, and – as ever – Thierry Valette has managed to give a focused tension to the blueberry and blackcurrant fruits. Just 19hl/h due to frost, aged in 15% new oak, spread across Bordeaux and Burgundy barrels, and oak casks. This should provide great drinkability over the next 5 to 15 years. 91 points

Deep crimson. Dark fruit and lightly minty. Marked acidity and fine, relatively smooth tannins. A little sweet/sour at the moment, the acidity highlighting the tannins on the finish. Needs time. 16 points

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Clos Puy Arnaud gives crushed black plums and blackberries aromas with suggestions of chargrill, tar and anise. The palate is medium-bodied and a little tart, with a chewy frame and fruit that verges on lean, finishing a little short. 82-84 points
