The 2016 Vrede Pinot Noir comes from shale soils, including around 10% whole bunches, matured for 11 months in 25% first-fill barrel, 25% second-fill and 50% third-fill. It has a perfumed, floral bouquet of cranberry and raspberry preserve scents complemented by pressed rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin; touches of candied orange peel infusing the tart red fruit with a brisk, slightly Pommard-like style. I would just like a little more substance on the finish here. Enjoy this over five or six years. 88 points
