2016 Berthaut-Gerbet Fixin Les Crais

A single vineyard and the flagship village wine of the Domaine. It is at the bottom of the village with quite deep soils and many stones. The vine age ranges from 10 to 80 years old, with about 30% at the younger end of the range and around 70% at the older. Amelie vinifies the plots seperately and then decides what to blend. With the new cellar extension barely finished she had put this wine into tank ready for bottling because she needed the barrels for the 17. The 2016 Berthaut-Gerbet Fixin Les Crais has dark, ripe fruit and fine texture. (CW 7/11/17)

The 2016 Fixin Les Crais was taken directly from tank and will include 20% new oak. It has a clean and pure bouquet with raspberry and crushed strawberry notes, a touch of vanilla pod developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, slightly chalky in texture and with plenty of freshness on the finish. This is a step up from the Fixin Village. 90-92 points

Here too a subtle backdrop of wood frames the ultra-fresh aromas of both red and dark currants, floral and pungent earth scents. There is a marked contrast between the relatively refined mid-palate mouthfeel to the middle weight flavors that diverge materially from the moderately austere and rustic finale that is notably firmer. 87-90 points

Julia Harding

Cask sample. Mid crimson, darker than most. Fruit character is darker than most too. But still scented. On the palate, dark-fruited, lightly spicy, complete and tasty. The tannins nicely chewy and in proportion. 16.5 points
