Fresh lemon and clementine accented by their candied peels mingle with mint and sassafras on a head-turning nose and a cooling, refreshing, invigoratingly piquant but at the same time subtly oil palate. The penetrating finish is tinglingly animating and generously juicy in a way that one doesn’t anticipate in a Riesling whose concentration, botrytization and sheer ripeness fully merit the Auslese designation. A wealth of stony and smoky mineral notes adds depth and intrigue to this vibrant set of variations on classic Treppchen themes of citrus, herbs and slate. (This wine wasn’t bottled until mid-September 2016, so when I tasted it at that time, I compared both a remnant taken from tank and a newly bottled sample.) 93 points
