Mauro runs one of the smallest, most traditional and respected cantinas in Gattinara. His cellar is so small that when four of us visited one person had to stand outside. His vineyards sit in the heart of Gattinara on red, iron rich soils and this vintage seems to reflect them more than most. It is the most resolutely traditional Nebbiolos. Square shouldered, smouldering with blood and iron encasing its core of fruit. It is a sternly majestic wine of great depth, harking back to another age. (EE 18/10/2018)
