Jaen is the Portuguese name for the variety better known in Spain as Mencia, a variety which excels at juicy, dark fruit-forward early drinkers. Which is exactly what the Espirito do Coa is. The cave art on the label isn`t just a gimmick, by the way - the wine is produced within the boundaries of the Coa National Park, which has a famous trove of prehistoric art. Winemaking traditions here don`t quite go back to the time of cavemen, but they are also pretty old. (NT 12/10/16)
