A bottling named in honour of Bessie Williamson, former Laphroaig owner and the first woman (at least in the 20th century) to manage a whisky distillery. She piloted the distillery through the difficult years of the Second World War, and in the 60s foresaw the boom in single malts, postioning Laphraoig for big success in the American market. This is a forcefully peated Islay malt, that takes me right back to my youthful adventures hiding in the family coal bunker. Air and water bring out a maritime note in the malt, a touch of tarry rope. Love it or hate it, an unashamed Islay malt. (NT 26/03/18)
