2011 Tormore AD Rattray 7 yo 64.9% (Speyside)

Bourbon barrel re-racked into ex-Rioja octaves
A product of the post-World War II whisky boom, Tormore’s original constructors seem to have suffered from a surfeit of enthusiasm. The distillery is housed in a listed building that looks like a cross between a glasshouse and an overturned supertanker, while the hedges outside are trimmed in the shape of whisky stills and there is an absurdly kitsch clock that plays different Scottish songs every quarter of an hour. Despite these eccentricities, they make a mean malt. This bottling encapsulates the richer side of Speyside, with chocolate, treacle and caramel, a touch of chili spice – then a splash of water brings out the underlying minerality. (20/12/18)
