Bourbon hogshead
Up in the north of Speyside where the land is flattening out as the Moray Firth draws near, you will find Benriach (or `Speckled Mountain` in Gaelic, presumably in reference to the slopes visible to the south of the distillery). This hidden gem of a distillery sits next to its illustrious twin, Longmorn. Built in 1898, Benriach almost instantly fell victim to the Pattison Whisky Crisis and shut its doors in 1900. It didn`t get going again till 1965, but since then has been producing a very high quality product. The spirity, sap-wood character of this bottling suggests fresh, unseasoned oak, a whiff of the sawmill, a barrel-toaster with a light touch. It’s almost like a fine grappa. (NT 13/12/18)
