You don`t often see Mencia with age on it, but then it was only relatively recently that winemakers like Ricardo Palacios proved how serious a grape variety it is. Earthy, rich, but in no way over-extracted, and with plenty of freshness to the fruit, this seems to belong somewhere between claret and the northern Rhone. But after the black cherry fruit there is some surprising Asian spicing, think cola cubes meet star anise. (NT 25/04/16)
