Don`t look down on grain whisky; made properly, it is an interesting and distinctive category in it own right. While grain whisky can be produced from more than one cereal, at west Edinburgh`s North British distillery they focus on maize. While almost all the production is sold for blending as the grain component in some very well-known labels, just occasionally you might be lucky enough to come across a single-cask bottling like this. Aromas of custard flan and creme brulee make for a fragranced, delightful bottling that does not go too far down the bourbon-esque road which some grain whiskies tread. (NT 04/09/17)
