Pinot Noir and Burgundy have been inextricably linked since the Roman era. The Cluniac and Cistercian monks organised the region around sites which were suited to Pinot Noir. The dukes of Burgundy so loved the grape that they forbade the planting of anything else! This fickle, thin-skinned, disease-prone variety is the heartbreak grape for winemakers, but (in the right hands) it can offer transcendental experiences for the fortunte drinker who finds a good example. As a result, the rest of the world has sought to prove that they too can grow this most tempramental of grape varieties. Which begs the question: does Burgundy still produce the best examples?
This tasting is the second in our France vs. the World series, in which the wine regions of France take on their counterparts other parts of the world. Each flight will be presented blind, to reduce the effects of favouritism. Join us to see if Pinot Noir from Burgundy truly can stand up to some of the best the rest of the world has to offer...
