Taittinger

Taittinger

Founded in 1734, Taittinger is based in Reims and although briefly US owned was bought back by the family in 2007 and still has a family member at the helm. Having worked with her father since then, Vitalie Taittinger took over from Pierre-Emmanuel in 2019, while he remains as honorary chair. As well as their Champagne base, the family also own vineyards in Chilham, Kent as a form of future-proofing for the climate emergency. Taittinger own around 288 hectares of their own vines, which gives them grapes for around 45% of their production and they work with trusted growers on long term contracts for the remainder. Just under half of the home estate vines are Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay at 37% and the balance of 15% Pinot Meunier. Farming is sustainable, working on organic principles and use massal selection for replacement vines. The top Taittinger cuvee is Comtes de Champagne and in both white and rose this truly deserves its place in the pantheon of top Champagnes. But as a house it also makes some great value wines, with the vintage cuvee in particular a fantastic wine for its price. (CW 12/03/20)
