Pol Roger

Pol Roger

`In defeat I need it, in Victory I deserve it,` Sir Winston Churchill. Pol Roger has had a strong British connection for over 130 years, personified in the last century by Sir Winston Churchill`s relationship - not only with the wine - but also with Odette, one of the daughters of the house. A lot of Sir Winston`s relationships were open, yet mysterious, and often characterised by utter loyalty, and so it was with Pol. Even particular vintages commanded deep affection and it is no exaggeration to say that he drank the company dry of the 1928 vintage - so unfortunately we can`t offer you a sip of that. In comparison, Uncorked`s relationship with Pol is but nascent, though we have been eyeing them up for a while across a space crowded with brands. Few of those we don`t already stock hold any attraction for us and even fewer fit with the Uncorked ethos of building sustainable relationships with small, high quality and family-owned firms. Pol Roger is a family-owned firm and is free from demands to cut corners and prioritise margin over quality. Part of Pol`s reciprocation of loyalty is to extend the ageing of Champagne intended for the British market. Naturally, we will only be buying this carefully nurtured stock (marked `Reserved for Great Britain`). Beware! Not all sellers of Pol honour the company`s heritage and quality; lesser merchants try to shave pennies off the very reasonable price by importing grey market wine. Without wishing to sound derogatory about the Belgians, other markets are less demanding about the length of time their Champagne spends in those 7 kilometres of subterranean chalk tunnel.
