Comtes Lafon

Dominque Lafon officially retired in 2021, after 37 years making wine at Comtes Lafon. He had been the first generation of the Lafon family to become a farmer and grow the grapes he vinified, and he was one of his generation’s leading lights in organic and biodynamic viticulture. Domaine des Comtes Lafon has been on the scene since the 19th century, and already enjoyed a reputation for outstanding whites when Dominque took over. Which in no way stopped him from ramping things up further, quite some distance! His first innovation was to gradually reclaim all the vineyards the domaine had been leasing out to sharecroppers. He then converted these to biodynamics, so all the vineyards have for some time been cultivated without the use of pesticides or chemical sprays.

Comtes Lafon is based in Meursault, with very high-quality holdings both there and in neighbouring Volnay. Keeping yields low has always allowed Lafon to pick at full ripeness without having to worry about low acidity. All the whites are barrel-fermented, with new oak being used for the premier crus and upwards. The reds are destemmed and vinified in stainless steel. In 1999, the Lafon family branched out and acquired a domaine in the Maconnais in the commune of Milly-Lamartine, made under the label ‘Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon’.

For some years, Dominque’s daughter Lea and son Pierre have been working assiduously at his side, learning all aspects of his craft. They are now fully in charge, taking Comtes Lafon into the future. Dominique remains a benevolent presence in the background. (NT 15/08/23)
