Azienda Agricola Antoniotti

In the foothills of the alps, in the Bramaterra region of Alto Piemonte, lies the little village of Sostegno. In wine terms it`s a forgotten region, though interest is slowly awakening. It has never been a wealthy area and after the phylloxera outbreak reached it much of the vineyard area was never replanted. A wave of emigration, the great depression, the last war and industrialisation all helped to strip the countryside of people and sharply reduce production. Forest quickly took over much of the land. But there are still plenty of very well run wine farms and one such is the classical estate of Antoniotti run by Odilio and his son Mattia. They are run on organic lines and their high vineyards are rampant with biodiversity of all kinds including hares and all kinds of wild flowers thriving on the equally diverse volcanic soils. There`s porphyry and limestone amongst others. The wine is still made in a cellar under the house, cramped and dark and dominated by a massive cement tank, now divided. There are also some old, large botti and the grapes come in through a small window onto the road. But their 6 hectares are allowing them to build a little and invest in their bottling and cellarage. These are pure wines, floral and delicate mountain wines with an absolute sense of place. The Antoniottis are amongst the midwives attending the rebirth of this ancient and valuable region.
