The photo is a rare shot of Olivier pausing for breath or (even more unlikely) listening to a question from one of the attendees at last year's Zind Humbrecht tasting. As he introduces you to his 2008 vintage, this most articulate of vignerons will keep you spellbound with a masterclass on the history, geology and philosophy of Alsace and (even) his own domaine. If you haven't ever sat at the feet of a master of all he does and just absorbed knowledge and expertise, then this is your chance.
The 2008 vintage would have been difficult to compare to any other vintage, had there been no 2007. In Alsace at least the two were quite similar and - in common with Burgundy - demanded an enormous amount of work in the vineyard if the wines were to be successful. Harvest was a long one as the season was very fragmented: flowering occurred over a three week period, and the last of the grapes came in during the third week of October. Sugar and acidity levels were high and the wines should have exceptional ageing potential.
To discover much more, there is a seat for you and nine wines to taste. /CW
