Billecart-Salmon Champagne on tasting every Friday this October,
tasting with Nicolas Billecart, plus halves of Brut Rosé to give away
Despite the worn floors (not to mention expressions), we are often still asked, when did you open? - as if it might've been a recent event. Flattering though this is, Uncorked opened its doors way back in October 1994 and collectively our staff have been here over two-thirds of a century, so there's a lot of experience. No one knows the precise date, and though Jim's adamant it was 1 October I know it wasn't, because that was a Saturday. So we've decided to settle on the 3rd. This was later than planned because a burst pipe left the almost-award-winning, beautiful new interior ankle-deep in water hours before the doors were due to open - click on the image below to read the story as reported in the (long since defunct) Broadgate Broadsheet of the time.
Reassuringly, several of our favoured producers from those early days are favourite producers right up to the present day - none more so than Champagne Billecart-Salmon (click here to see the Champagne page and here for the fine wine pages from our earliest lists). Selling Billecart today is a cinch compared with 20 years ago, when neither of us was widely known. Although one of us still isn't, the other has won almost every conceivable accolade (good Wine-searcher post here, 18 September 2014), and so it is with enormous pleasure that we celebrate our first 20 years with Billecart's support.
Starting Friday 3 October, we are showing a different Billecart-Salmon cuvée at each of our regular free Friday tastings throughout October. Plus, on Thursday next week (9 October), we welcome Nicolas Billecart back to the shop to host an informal tasting, between 6 and 7pm. The seventh generation of his family at the firm, Nicolas learned most of what he knows now from doing a stage at Uncorked back in the summer of 2008 (none of it to do with wine). As if that weren't enough, we also have several cases of half bottles of Billecart's legendary Rosé to give away. There's one half bottle free for every purchase in store on a Friday over £50 which includes Billecart, while stocks last.
