TNI Friday: England's top fizz on tasting today

Nyetimber Manor (call that a lake?)

16/04/10

Free of charge at our Bishopsgate shop, 12-7pm Friday 16 April

What business does a Canadian have writing about the best wine England produces, you may be asking yourself? Well, an objective perspective seems appropriate, I thought, for a winery owned by a Dutchman, with chalky soils divorced from France (Champagne, to be specific) during the Quaternary era, and the vinification being directed by fellow Canuck/head winemaker Cherie Spriggs. We wouldn't want some sappy Englishman waxing patriotic on the virtues of his homeland's produce.

So I've been charged with letting you know that this is quite simply (no BS), the superlative fizz from England and one of sparkling wine's elite. Charlie from Nyetimber will be pouring the 2003 Classic Cuvee as well as the 1995 vintage to show the wine's ageing potential, from noon on. For those of you that scoff at non-Champagne bubbles, I say, come and taste for yourself! /CC

Offered subject to remaining unsold
