Rochi MMVIII (/IX)

Owned by the Rochioli family since 1938 and farmed by them for much longer than that, the Rochioli Estate sits on some of the best terroir in Sonoma County's Russian River Valley. Due to a logistical problem we missed out on the property's 2007s so we're all the more delighted with this year's sequel, Rochi MMVIII (2009 for the Sauvignon).

Rochioli made their original reputation as growers rather than winemakers and Williams Selyem, Castalia, Gary Farrell, Alysian and L'Ecosse are among the winemakers who regularly bid for the high quality fruit available here. Further, to get a toehold on the waitlist new winemakers are auditioned as Rochioli want their name appearing on only the best wines. Now of course their estate wines are in even greater demand and short supply, while remaining very reasonably priced. /CW
