2013 Chablis en primeur: fruit, not fossils

8 Jan 2015

Fabien Moreau - 2013 Chablis en primeurBenoit Droin, Christian Moreau

In many vintages recently Chablis has perhaps represented the epitome of Burgundy, with highly mineral and terroir-specific wines demonstrating those minute but highly significant differences in the landscape. In 2013 the weather conditions - the cruel face of Mother Nature as the 2013 cliché has it - have obscured certain aspects of this terroir definition. The wines still have their own identities, but in general are softer and early drinking Chardonnays that will provide a useful point of difference and style from the Cote d'Or whites.

With their low natural alcohol, these fruity wines for early consumption will appeal to many for whom the normal austerity of the Chablis brand can be a bit much. And for fans of Chablis and Burgundy, the chance to have this extraordinary vintage in your tasting history will be a fascinating counterpoint to the more usual iterations from this area. /CW
