When Olivier Humbrecht came to host our tasting of his amazing 2007s last year, he was clear that he couldn't easily compare the '07 growing season to any other vintage. This year, when he came to show these 2008s, the comparison was easy: 2007!

The wines are different though. Like 2008 Burgundy the 2008 Zind-Humbrechts have fantastic structure propping up the generous fruit and amazing mineral flavours. A cool summer with wet and dry spells in good proportions meant that the harvest was late and prolonged with plenty of time for vines to pull those minerals into the fruit, so terroir is a watchword of the year. Although cool, all wines came in fully ripe but with good acidity and fermentations proceeded slowly. They will drink well throughout their long lives.

The quality of the Zind-Humbrecht vineyard sites shone through the tasting but what really impressed us and those of you who joined us back in March was the energy, the zingy fruit and the expressiveness. These are fantastically lively wines with real varietal and terroir identity. But don't just take our word for it - this afternoon at our Bishopsgate shop presents another opportunity to taste them. /CW
