2005 Dom Perignon: 'An instant wow wine'

'We are warriors'

- Dom Pérignon oenologist, Vincent Chaperon

'Dom Pérignon 2005: An instant wow wine. The fabulously full, toasty aromas and luxuriously rich, toast chocolaty, coffee-infused red and black fruits are as seductive as I have seen in any Dom Perignon from the moment it has been launched.' - Tom Stevenson

Like the Mounties always get their man, so the Dom Pérignon team always fight to the last for the best quality fruit for their wine. As a house without a non-vintage, it will be a rare year without a Dom Pérignon, even if as in 2005 they don't produce very much.

We went to taste it recently - a bit sceptical about what we were about to receive. It turned out to be an absolutely delicious wine to drink. It is very attractive now, but still cast in that classic, reductive Dom Pérignon mould and will age very well. Like most high-end LVMH launches it was done with pizzazz. The Plénitude launch included 1998 and 1982 but the 2005 was easily the best of the tasting and demonstrates a trend with DP I think. They have been getting more intensity into the wines in recent releases and the Champagne is achieving a much better balance with less overt acidity and more mineral and phenolic aspects providing the structure.

This year there is very little due to both hail and rigorous sorting. In fact we will see another vintage in the autumn, so this is your chance to pick up some of this super attractive cuvée. /CW

'The 2005 Dom Pérignon opens with the classic Dom Pérignon bouquet. Warm toasty notes meld into expressive fruit in a supple, silky Champagne endowed with stunning depth, nuance and complexity. Sweet floral notes add lift as the wine opens up in the glass. Overall, the 2005 is a relatively delicate, gracious DP, but what it lacks in depth it more than makes up with persistence and its open, totally inviting personality. Today it's hard to see the 2005 making old bones, but it is a gorgeous wine to drink while the 2004 ages. In 2005, the release is scheduled to last about six months, which means production is down around 50% over normal levels. All I can say is the 2005 is fabulous, especially in a vintage that required considerable sorting to eliminate rampant rot in the Pinots. 95 points.' - Antonio Galloni, vinousmedia.com, May 2014
