Just arrived and on tasting today from noon 2 May 2008 |
Down Under we`re not really prone to hyperbole. Well, there`s no need when we live in the best country, with the best beaches, the best restaurants, the best cricket team,
apart-from-a-slight-blip the best rugby team, and we`re best at the Olympic stuff, too (on a per capita basis, of course).
On top of that our wines are kicking goals and the poor French are all over the shop.
But even by our standards, the praise for the latest release of Leeuwin`s finest, the Art Series Chardonnay, is bordering on the gushing:

`Time may well prove it to be the greatest Leeuwin Chardonnay yet.` - Ray Jordan, The West Magazine, The West Australian, 16 February 2008
`To my tastes this is as good as a young Art Series gets. A classic. 97 points.` - Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au, February 2008
`The trajectory of this wine is astronomical. You`ll still be tasting it tomorrow.
Did we say this is the best Chard in Aus?` - Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer, The Best Wines of Australia, Taste Food & Wine 2008

There`s been no bludging for Denis & Tricia Horgan since, well, ever.
The initial nursery was planted in 1974, followed by work on the vineyard proper - deep ploughing and ripping, then emptied of all stones.
After that they planned the layout, measured it, pegged it out, marked it up and finally planted it. By hand. It took `em yonks.
Fair Dinkum. Struth, you`d be priddy stuffed after that.
The first commercial vintage was `79, then the 1980 Art Series Chardonnay gained international recognition courtesy of Decanter Magazine`s highest recommendation.
Ever since then it`s been full on. But if ya think I`m spinning a yarn, come and get ya laughing gear around some of these bewdies that are on tasting today. No worries. /PG

Art Series Riesling `06: `Light straw. Strong citrus and spice aromas are complicated by jasmine and mint.
Strikingly fresh, with vivid tangerine and pear flavors, chewy texture and a long, penetrating finish.
A dry, clean, refreshing riesling, in a typical style for Leeuwin. 90 points.` - Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 2007
Art Series Sauvignon `06: `Punchy aromas of gooseberries, passionfruit and melon with lightly herbaceous and lemony undertones precede a juicy, unctuous palate whose brightly lit fruit has a lifted tropical aspect.
Long, clean and refreshing, it`s a classic example of this maker`s style.` - Jeremy Oliver, Wine Annual 2008
Prelude Chardonnay `06: `You might be forgiven for thinking of Prelude as a `poor-man`s` Art Series` but in fact it`s a good deal more than half the wine for a third of the price.
Save the big boy for the next time you`re entertaining royalty (or tricky in-laws), or finish the bottle in the kitchen before your guests arrive (hee hee) and then serve Prelude when they rock up.
Either way, bathe yourself in this stunning wine`s grapefruit blossom, fresh lemons and mellifluous texture.` - Matthew Jukes & Tyson Stelzer, Taste Food & Wine 2008
Art Series Chardonnay `05: `To my tastes this is as good as a young Art Series gets.
It`s a fantastically restrained, lengthy, elegant wine, its mass of flavour coiled so tight and intricate that it almost presents as delicate.
It tastes of grapefruit, fresh-cut lemons, toast, saw dusty oak and green apples. It is very, very long.
This vintage was very cool, and it has produced an exceptionally tight, reserved, sophisticated wine that should age for a good long time.
A classic. Drink 2012-2018. 97 Points.` - Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au, February 2008
`The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2003 Shiraz Art Series possesses spicy white chocolate, black cherry and berry fruit intermixed with oak and pepper notes.
This medium-bodied, fresh Shiraz from the cool climate Margaret River region is made in a completely different style than a McLaren Vale or Barossa Shiraz.
Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years. Drink 2006-2010. 89 points.` - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, December 2006
Art Series Cabernet `02: `The hue is good, though not deep; basically in the mainstream of Leeuwin cabernet style, good length and balance to the savoury black fruits, oak a positive contributor.
92 points. Drink now-2022.` - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2008
