‘There’s no doubting the commitment to quality here, but it comes at a price. Reassuringly, though, even the cheapest wines are excellent of their type; it’s hard to spot a duff producer in the whole list. France is the focus, with excellent offerings from the Rhone as well as Bordeaux and Burgundy. California is represented by many of its finest vineyards. There’s a handsome showing of spirits too.’

‘Andrew Rae and Jim Griffen have been trading their impressive set of wines to City folk for ten years now, whether ex-VAT for investment, or for drinking. There’s no shortage of illustrious, prize-winning wine here, at extremely competitive prices: classics from France, Italy and Port(ugal); seriously complex wines from independent Australian producers; and fabulously impressive, though not cheap, California listings from small but near-perfect Napa producers Abreu, Araujo, Dalla Valle and Harlan – all difficult to find elsewhere in the UK. Shafer and Ridge (also from California) are less uncommon, but just as welcome here. Alongside a wide range of champagnes and Rhone wines are some interesting one-offs such as Huet’s 1962 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux and Niepoort’s Redoma Tinto from the Douro Valley, Portugal.
A solid range of Burgundy en primeurs and a wider-ranging Bordeaux selection takes in top-notch Le Pin and chateaux Angelus, Valandraud and L’Evangile from the Right Bank; Palmer, Gruaud-Larose and Ducru-Beaucaillou from the Left.
Uncorked, supplying unquestionably superior vinous wares, is renowned for its unstuffy attitude, and the team is still as unintimidating as ever.’
